SEAS THE DAY! EARN YOUR CAPTAIN'S LICENSE
ABOUT CAPTAIN GREG METCALF
In 2010 Atlantic Captain’s Academy developed a curriculum of Coast Guard–approved courses for captain license candidates. Instructor and founder Captain Greg Metcalf is passionate about helping others have the same opportunities on the water that he has enjoyed by assisting them in obtaining their captain’s license.
Greg was introduced to the ocean at the early age of five. His family summered in Point Judith, Rhode Island where his dad taught him how to row a boat, fish, sail and learn about the freedom of the sea.
His first summer job working on the water was at age seventeen, as a mate aboard a charter boat in Galilee. He worked his way though college working aboard private sport fishing yachts, fishing in tuna and billfish tournaments from Montauk, New York to Portland, Maine during his summer vacations.
After graduating from Providence College he began running private yachts and participating in big game fishing tournaments. Some of his sport fishing accomplishments include winning top honors in the Nantucket Billfish Tournament, Rhode Island Tuna Tournament, United States Atlantic TunaTournament, Block Island Billfish Tournament and The Wentworth Invitational Tuna Tournament.
In 1983 Greg received his U.S Coast Guard Captain’s license. In March of 1984 he started a fishing tackle manufacturing business while continuing to run sport fishing yachts. For the next twenty-five years he designed, manufactured and marketed fishing tackle, fished and spent as much time on the water as possible.
In April of 2007 Greg sold Atom Lures Manufacturing to Uncle Josh Bait Company. That summer he started a charter fishing and sightseeing business aboard his boat, the Striper Swiper in Kennebunkport, Maine. During the winter of 2007 he began teaching a captain’s license course for a New England based school. He has graduated hundreds of students since 2008 with a very high success rate. Realizing his passion for teaching and recognizing a real need for the service, he was inspired to develop and form Atlantic Captain’s Academy.
Also a field editor for the Fisherman Magazine, you can read Greg’s weekly reports and articles in the Fisherman Magazine, New England edition. During the spring and fall when not running charters, he is a delivery captain for Hinckley Yachts as well as other private owners and yacht dealers.
