Atlantic Captains Academy

Welcome to Atlantic Captain's Academy

Established in 2010, Atlantic Captain’s Academy emerged as a distinguished institution offering a meticulously crafted curriculum of Coast Guard–approved courses tailored for captain license candidates. Founded by Captain Greg Metcalf, a seasoned professional driven by a deep-seated passion for the water, the academy aims to provide aspiring individuals with the same exceptional opportunities he has relished throughout his career, guiding them towards the attainment of their captain’s license.

Captain Greg’s profound connection with the ocean dates back to his early childhood, when he was introduced to the wonders of Point Judith, Rhode Island. Under his father’s tutelage, he honed his skills in boat rowing, fishing, sailing, and embraced the profound freedom the sea offers.

Embarking on his professional journey at the age of seventeen, Captain Greg secured his first summer job as a mate aboard a charter boat in Galilee. Demonstrating unwavering commitment, he gradually worked his way through college, spending his summer vacations aboard private sport fishing yachts and engaging in tuna and billfish tournaments spanning from Montauk, New York to Portland, Maine.

Upon graduating from Providence College, Captain Greg assumed the helm of private yachts, actively participating in high-stakes big game fishing tournaments. His prowess in sport fishing was duly recognized through prestigious accolades earned in renowned competitions such as the Nantucket Billfish Tournament, Rhode Island Tuna Tournament, United States Atlantic Tuna Tournament, Block Island Billfish Tournament, and The Wentworth Invitational Tuna Tournament.

In 1983, Captain Greg obtained his esteemed U.S Coast Guard Captain’s license. In March 1984, while simultaneously managing sport fishing yachts, he initiated a fishing tackle manufacturing business, passionately designing, manufacturing, and marketing fishing tackle for the subsequent twenty-five years. Throughout this period, he immersed himself in the serenity of the water, continually nurturing his deep-seated affinity for the sea.

In April 2007, Captain Greg’s accomplishments led him to sell Atom Lures Manufacturing to Uncle Josh Bait Company. That summer, he ventured into the charter fishing and sightseeing business aboard his vessel, the Striper Swiper, in Kennebunkport, Maine. During the winter of the same year, he embarked on a teaching endeavor, offering a comprehensive captain’s license course for a prominent New England-based school. Since 2008, he has successfully guided and graduated hundreds of students, solidifying his recognition as an exceptional educator. Driven by his ardor for teaching and recognizing the inherent demand for such services, he envisioned and established Atlantic Captain’s Academy.

Captain Greg’s expertise also extends to his role as a field editor for the Fisherman Magazine, where readers can delve into his insightful weekly reports and articles featured in the esteemed publication’s New England edition. Additionally, during the spring and fall seasons when not captaining charters, he assumes the responsibility of a delivery captain for Hinckley Yachts, as well as other esteemed private owners and yacht dealers.
